How To Make Homemade Custard Powder

Homemade Custard Powder is made up of milk powder, flavoring, and thickeners. This powder is readily available in many parts of the world including Africa.

Custard is simple yet very difficult to make. A lot of people often wonder how they can make a custard meal that is lump-free. The custard should be thick after preparation so that when milk is added a perfect consistency will be achieved. In this post, I will be teaching you how to make custard powder from scratch and how to prepare it.

How To Make Custard Powder

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Ingredient 

  • 1 cup of milk powder
  • ½ cup cornflour (corn starch)
  • ¼ teaspoon powdered yellow food coloring or egg yellow powder
  • ½ teaspoon Vanilla flavour or any flavour of your choice.

Procedure

  1. Sieve the cornflour or starch in a dry bowl 
  2. Add the egg yellow, vanilla flavor, milk powder and mix all ingredients together.
  3. Your custard is ready. Store in an airtight container. 

NOTE: It can last as long as the expiring date of the milk powder.

Special Custard powder Recipe

 Ingredient

  • ½ cup cornflour (corn starch)
  • 1 cup dry milk powder
  • 2 vanilla pods or 1 teaspoon ground vanilla 
  • ¼ teaspoon powdered yellow food coloring 
  • Icing sugar
  • Pinch of salt.

Procedure

  1. In a bowl, add cornflour, milk powder, icing sugar, salt, and food coloring. Mix all ingredients together.
  2. Slice and scrape out the vanilla seeds. Add to the bowl and mix well.
  3. Cut the vanilla pods up and add to a jar. Transfer the mixture into the jar and store it in a cool and dry place. The vanilla pods will continue to infuse the powder during storage.

How To Turn Custard Powder Into Custard

  • Custard Powder
  • Sugar
  • Water (hot and cold)
  • Milk (optional)

Procedure

  1. In a clean pot or kettle, boil water 
  2. In a bowl or cup, add the custard powder and little cold water.
  3. Dissolve the custard powder in water and make sure no lump is formed.
  4. Add the boiling water to the dissolved custard and stir well till a thick consistency is achieved.
  5. Add your milk and sugar, stir. Serve with Akara, Moi Moi e.t.c
