How to make tofu

Tofu is an alternative to animal protein. Compared to meat it has lower levels of saturated fatty acids and high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. They are also a good source of lecithin and linoleic acid which help regulate the metabolism and eliminate cholesterol deposits in the body.

What is Tofu?

Tofu is a cheeselike food made of curdled soybean milk. This recipe is made from soybeans. The soybean is soaked, blended and filtered to extract the milk. The extracted milk is coagulated and pressed to form a solid white block of various shapes and sizes.

How to make Tofu (home-made tofu)

Below are a few health benefits of tofu.

Tofu help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The regular consumption of tofu and other soy products may help lower the level of saturated fat in the body. Due to its low sodium content, it is also good for people with high blood pressure.

They contain isoflavones which help in managing the symptoms of menopause and help stabilize the estrogen levels during menopause. Isoflavones are known to be beneficial in reducing the risk of different types of cancer like breast cancer, lung cancer, and prostate cancer.

It is a rich source of calcium, which is essential in bone formation and helps prevent osteoporosis. Intake of soy protein helps lower blood sugar and insulin levels considerably which thus help reduce the risk of diabetes.

They are a rich source of protein, phosphorus, and sodium, which makes it good for the kidney. These minerals make it a great addition to the renal diet and help prevent chronic kidney diseases.

Tofu is also an excellent source of iron, which helps prevent anemia. Intake of tofu help lower the risk of anemia among adults. They are a great source of protein for vegans and vegetarians and they provide the required amount of amino acids that are beneficial for maintaining optimal health.

Home-made tofu is known to help improve memory and cognitive function. Lecithin content present in tofu helps the body produce the phospholipids phosphatidic acid (PA) and phosphatidylserine (PS), which aid in the normal functioning of the neurons.

How to make tofu

Equipment

  • Cheesecloth
  • Gas or Stove
  • Knife
  • Pot
  • Bowl
  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 3 cups soybeans
  • 75ml cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Water
  • Salt

Procedure

  1. Pick and soak the seeds of the soybean in water overnight so that it becomes soft and easy to peel off the skin.
  2. Peel off the skin from the seeds, rinse multiple times until the seeds come out clean.
  3. Pour the clean seed into a blender, add some water and blend until smooth.
  4. Pour the smooth paste into a cheesecloth to strain the milk out.
  5. Pour the sieved or strained milk into a pot and cook on medium heat for 50 minutes to 1 hour, stirring frequently.
  6. Reduce the heat, then add in lime juice. Note: after adding the lime juice do not stir.
  7. The tofu would start to form after a few minutes. Turn off the heat.
  8. Place a cheesecloth in a bowl, pour the tofu carefully into the cheesecloth, then fold the cheesecloth to squeeze out as much milk as possible.
  9. Transfer to a bowl, then season with salt.
  10. Transfer to the cheesecloth and allow to rest  
  11. Cut the tofu into desired sizes and shapes.
